In 1981, construction began on a dam to reservoir the Mijares River upstream from the medieval Santa Quiteria bridge, located between Almassora and Vila-real. The purpose was to manage the variations in irrigation intakes and prevent water loss.
With a storage volume of 350,000 m³, the “Pantanet” (as it is commonly known) has since become a habitat of rich biodiversity featuring numerous species—a true natural oasis between two cities.
In 2019, the Almassora City Council refurbished the land adjacent to the “Molí de Pedra” (Stone Mill), which was ceded by the irrigation communities, to provide optimal access to the water. Since then, many athletes have gathered at this site to enjoy nautical activities such as kayaking and paddle surfing.
Once on the water, exploring both banks of the reservoir, visitors can follow a fully navigable circular route of over 2 km. Along this path, the remains of ancient hydraulic structures emerge from among the thick riverside vegetation.
