At the foot of the mountain that gives this unique range its name, the Espadán peak, lies one of its natural wonders: a large cavity with numerous karst formations known as the Estuco Cave (Grotte of Stucco). Access to the cave is via the forest track that separates the municipalities of Alcudia de Veo and Algímia de Almonacid, an area declared a natural park where the red “rodeno” stone contrasts with the dense vegetation of cork oaks and pines.
It features two small entrances: one located in the vault, partially barred, and a lateral one that leads to a small balcony overlooking the main hall. This grand gallery, spanning over 800 square meters, is presided over by a massive stalagmite formation 14 meters high. A high ceiling adorned with numerous stalactites in different shades, and walls decorated by the whimsical shapes of flowstones and draperies, bestow a natural beauty upon this place that supports the legend that they had been “stuccoed by an extravagant genius”—hence the origin of its name. At the back of this enormous room, hidden among rockfalls, lies a small gallery called the “Sacristy,” with white walls created by sediments left behind by water accumulation and filtration in the past. At midday, when the sun reaches its zenith above the upper opening, the cavity is fully illuminated, offering a spectacular sight.
Despite the relative accessibility of its side entrance, it is important to remember that it is not equipped for tourist visits. It is essential to use a helmet and lighting, and it requires acceptable physical fitness and safety gear to overcome a steep and slippery ramp located just a few meters from the entrance. During the visit, it is vital to respect the interior of the cave; we must preserve its formations as they are a rich natural heritage. Furthermore, caves are wildlife shelters, and our visit must not disturb their habitat.
